Kenny review

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 20 May 2010 10:30 (A review of Kenny)

This was a great Australian movie. As you can probably tell it shows the life of a guy that sets up portable toilets at major events in Australia. It had some really funny moments though there were also parts that were a little slow. It it beneficial to know some Australian slang to fully understand the movie but its not required. I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys aussie movies or likes comedy movies.

Fun with Dick and Jane review

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 17 May 2010 11:49 (A review of Fun with Dick and Jane)

I am not a fan of Jim Carrey but decided to rent this movie as it had decent ratings. The two main characters go from having a cushy lifestyle to foreclosure after the company Dick works for crashes. They struggle to keep their house and go to desperate measures to gain money. Their struggle for survival is amusing and made me laugh a few times. The storyline and plot was decent but nothing spectacular, but was entertaining. This movie would be good for anyone who enjoys Jim Carrey movies or comedy movies.

Sunshine Cleaning review

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 17 May 2010 11:48 (A review of Sunshine Cleaning)

This movie provided a delightful insight into the world of crime scene cleanup. Rose is a single mom who is struggling to make ends meets and decides to start her own business which specializes in crime scene cleanup. Although she has no experience and a flighty sister for an assistance they try and act the part when it comes to business. They make some hilarious goofs throughout the movie but in the end they learn from their errors. I was unsure how a movie about crime scene cleanup could be entertaining but it was well worth watching. The characters were priceless especially Norah and the father as they played the dysfunctional family so well. If you enjoy indie comedies or something a little bit different, then this one is worth watching.

Fast Food Nation review

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 17 May 2010 11:47 (A review of Fast Food Nation)

Fast Food Nation is a drama that will make you rethink about running out and get a quick meal at a fast food place. Based on the best selling book of the same name the producers decided to make a drama of the book rather than the documentary that most people would produce. This was a potentially risky move however it succeeded in attracting a wider audience. The film touched on many topics in the fast food industry including the low paid fast food workers, the farmers who grow the livestock, the slaughterhouses and the undocumented workers who often work in these high risk, low paying jobs. The movie did a good job in showing viewers about each of these issues in an interesting and informative way. I really enjoyed the movie for both its cinematic and educational aspects and would recommend this to anyone who enjoyed movies like Super Size Me. Just make sure you satisfy your junk food craving before watching the movie!!!

Midnight Madness review

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 17 May 2010 11:46 (A review of Midnight Madness)

Midnight Madness is one of those hidden gems from the 80's. The movie follows 5 teams as they race around the city from clue to clue as they race against each other. The characters in the movie are just hilarious, especially the nerds and the jocks, and they will make you laugh all throughout the movie. It is interesting to watch the teams as they try to decipher each clue and its not surprising that some resort to a little cheating to help them get an edge. Overall the movie was a delightful surprise find. If you enjoy movies from the 80's then you should check this one out!

The Dish review

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 17 May 2010 11:45 (A review of The Dish)

The Dish is a wonderful little movie about a radio telescope in rural Australia that is enlisted by NASA to help broadcast the first moon landing. The people enlisted to help with the telescope run into some issues in the days leading up to the moon walk but they band together to solve those problems. The acting and setting were true to life and they did a great job of capturing the spirit of the people of rural Australia. It was interesting to see what happened behind the scenes of the first moon landing as this is something most people haven't seen or thought of before. I really enjoyed the movie and would recommend this to anyone who enjoys movies based in Australia or is even remotely interested in the first moon landing.

17 Again review

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 17 May 2010 11:43 (A review of 17 Again)

17 Again is a fun comedy about a guy who missed his chance to be successful after choosing his high school sweetheart over a chance for a college scholarship. Now that he is in his 30's and going through a divorce he wonders what he would do if he could do it all again. He gets his chance as he turns 17 overnight and goes back to high school along side his own kids. What happens next is somewhat predictable but there are some funny and cute moments and is a decent movie. The movie has a similar storyline as "13 going on 30" but having a male lead and the character getting younger instead. This is definitely a movie more suited for the rom com crowd but would be a good date night movie too.

Danny Deckchair (2003) review

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 17 May 2010 11:42 (A review of Danny Deckchair (2003))

Danny Deckchair was a surprise hit for me. I am a fan of Australian made movies even though they disappoint me 50% of the time, so I was not expecting a great deal when I rented it. Thankfully the movie turned out to be entertaining and definitely worth the rental. The movie centers around a guy named Danny who is a typical aussie footy loving, beer drinking yobbo (kinda like a redneck) who has the crazy idea of filling up helium balloons to a deckchair and flying around. After successfully taking off he flies off to a distant small town where he reevaluates his priorities. Their is a good dosing of romance in the story but is not so overpowering and there is a good bit of comedy as well. The plot is similar to Doc Hollywood and this movie would definitely appeal to those who enjoyed that movie. If you are looking for something a little different to watch this week then this is one worth watching.

Return to Sleepaway Camp review

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 17 May 2010 11:41 (A review of Return to Sleepaway Camp)

Having not seen the previous movies I was unaware of the previous storyline. However in this genre it is usually not required as we all know what is going to happen. Sleepaway camp is just a normal summer camp that has its share of problems, including a bully named Alan, who will probably annoy you with his antics. The other campers take delight in harassing and picking on Alan and shortly afterward people start dying in brutal ways. The movie had a good feel of a summer camp and the murders happened without being too gory. The die hard horror fans will most likely be disappointed with this movie as it is not explicitly graphic and it is certainly not an original storyline, however the casual horror fan may enjoy this one.

Knowing review

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 17 May 2010 11:40 (A review of Knowing )

Knowing was just as good as the previews made it out to be which is not too common these days. The story starts where a MIT professor obtains a written list of numbers which was pulled out of a time capsule laid 50 years ago. He soon discovers that these seemingly random numbers are actually predictions of major disasters covering the last 50 years and they are deadly accurate. What he discovers next is even more sinister and he sets out to prevent this devastating event from happening. The movie was powerful and had your attention the entire time. It had elements from several genres and as such made it appeal to a wide range of audiences. The ending was not what I expected but it did fit into the storyline and although it was my least favorite part of the movie did a good job in wrapping things up. If you are looking for a good movie to watch this one should appeal to most people and is worth renting.
